Financial Aid - Summer 2017

As with the regular academic year, students must be a matriculated, degree seeking Cal Poly student in a regular Cal Poly Program to be eligible for summer financial aid.

Initial summer financial aid awards will be made starting in May to eligible students who are registered for summer term, have a 2016-17 FAFSA on file with Cal Poly and meet current satisfactory academic progress requirements. 

Students who are not eligible for summer aid will be notified via a message on their To Do List. Students can then decide if they will pay for their summer courses directly or not attend.

Students who have loan eligibility that was previously declined will also be notified via a message on their To Do List and will need to notify the Financial Aid Office if they want to borrow for the summer. 

To be considered for summer aid, you must complete the 2016-17 FAFSA. If you have not already filed the 2016-17 FAFSA, it must be completed no later than 10:00pm PDT June 30, 2017.

Summer aid eligibility is based on the number of units in which you are enrolled, your family contribution, and remaining eligibility in the following financial aid programs:

  • Pell Grant
  • Federal Direct Stafford Loan (SUB and UNSUB)
  • Graduate PLUS Loan
  • Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)*

To be eligible for a summer loan students must be registered in at least half-time units (6 units for undergraduate and 4 units for graduate students).

*Note: Parent (PLUS) Loan Borrowers: You must complete the summer PLUS application at even if you borrowed a PLUS loan during the academic year (fall, winter or spring). PLUS loan applications for summer will be available after April 28, 2017.

Summer enrolled students can check their Cal Poly 'To Do List' for summer messages.

Summer courses start Thursday, June 22, 2017.  Students eligible for financial aid disbursement (enrolled in the first 5 week session, full-time for Pell Grant, at least half-time for student loans) should begin to have funds disbursed to their student accounts on Monday June 26, 2017. Refunds will occur starting on Wednesday, June 28, 2017.  Enrollment in less than full-time will delay Pell Grant disbursement until the third week of the term. Please budget your personal resources appropriately.

Please note: if your half time status is due to enrollment in concurrent 5 week courses, your enrollment will be checked and if your enrollment changes to below half time, the summer loan will be revoked and will be immediately due and payable to Cal Poly.

Students enrolled in only the 2nd 5-week session cannot have aid disburse until the start of the session.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

If you are a continuing student and on financial aid probation for 2016-17 academic year, aid will not be awarded until spring grades are posted and we can verify your satisfactory academic progress (after 6/26/17). For details, read Cal Poly's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.  You will need to plan to pay for classes directly and be reimbursed by aid if it is determined you have eligibility for summer aid.

After spring grades are posted any student who did not meet SAP for 2016-17 will have summer aid canceled and would need to appeal for continued eligibility.  See link above.
